ABOUT Chana Bateta (Black gram and potato gravy) RECIPE

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 cups Chana or Black Gram soaked overnight
  2. 3 Onion finely chopped plus 1 chopped to garnish
  3. 2 Tomatoes chopped
  4. 2 Potatoes peeled and cubed
  5. 2 tbsp Cooking oil
  6. 6 to 8 Curry Leaves
  7. 2-3 tbsp Gram Flour or Besan
  8. 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  9. 1 tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  10. 1 tbsp Coriander powder
  11. 1 tbsp Cumin Powder
  12. 1 tbsp Tamarind soaked in 2 tbsp of water
  13. 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  14. 1 tsp Jaggery
  15. 1 tsp Fenugreek Seeds
  16. Coriander leaves – for garnishing.
  17. Salt to Taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the chana overnight. Next day pressure cook the chana with 3 cups of water till 2 whistles blow. The chana should be soft but not mushy.
  2. In a cooking pot, heat oil add fenugreek seeds & curry leaves. Add in the 3 chopped onions & ginger garlic paste. Cook till the onions turn translucent.
  3. Add in all the dried masala powders. (chilli, turmeric, cumin & coriander) Cook for 2 minutes. Add in the chopped tomatoes & cook till it separates from the oil.
  4. Add in the potatoes. Half cook them for 4-5 minutes. Continue stirring so that the potatoes do not stick to the bottom of the pot.
  5. Add gram flour and stir. Add the boiled chana along with it’s water to the pot. Stir continuously. Adjust the consistency.
  6. Add salt to taste. Cook on medium heat, covered. Check continuously and stir in between.
  7. Add in the jaggery and tamarind pulp and give a good stir.
  8. Serve it hot garnished with chopped onion and coriander leaves alongside crusty buttered buns.
