ABOUT Budme Ki Masoor Daal (yellow pumpkin and red lentils daal) RECIPE

An all time yummy, super delicious comfort food in winters of every Hyderabadi as such. Budma or yellow pumpkin, also called as dosakaya in Telugu is a versatile veggie used for umpteen dishes. Be it a pickle or a dosa or a daal or curry, it is one veggie that i personally like to have in Winters when the markets are loaded with fresh vegetables and fruits. Try this simple comfort food for yourselves to experience it's flavour and taste. Happy Cooking Everyone!

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Budma or yellow cucumber 1
  2. Red lentils 1 1/2 cups
  3. Ginger garlic paste 1 tbsp
  4. Turmeric 1 tsp
  5. Green chillies 2-3
  6. Salt 1 tbsp or to taste
  7. Red chilli powder 1 tbsp
  8. Tomatoes chopped 3-4
  9. Tamarind water 2 cups (2-3 tbsp tamarind soaked in 2 cups hot water)
  10. Curry leaves 1/4 cup
  11. FOR TEMPERING ; Oil 2 tbsp
  12. Cumin seeds 1 tbsp
  13. Dry red chillies 3
  14. Garlic sliced thinly 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook red lentils with red chilli powder, turmeric, chopped tomatoes and ginger garlic paste until done.
  2. Wash and peel the yellow cucumber before chopping into bite sized pieces. Don't forget to remove all the seeds.
  3. Let the cooker settle down on it's own before opening the lid. Add the green chillies, curry leaves and the pumpkin pieces.
  4. Also add the tamarind water squeezing it well to the daal.
  5. Cook on a medium high heat and adjust salt according to taste.
  6. Heat oil for the tempering as the final step.
  7. Add garlic slices first and let these brown up a bit before adding the cumin seeds and finally the dry red chillies.
  8. Add this hot tempering to the daal and enjoy this super awesome comfort food with your loved ones and friends alike.
