Bisi bele bath or Bisi bele huli anna is a traditional and most popular dish of Karnataka made with rice, lentils and mixed vegetables.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Toor daal 3/4 cup
  2. Rice 1 1/4 cup
  3. 2-3 carrot
  4. Dried green peas 1/4 cup (soaked overnight)
  5. 1 medium size kohlrabi/navilkosu (cut into small cubes)
  6. Beans 1 cup
  7. Onion 1 small
  8. Grated Coconut 1/4 cup
  9. Tamarind small ball size soaked in 1 cup water
  10. salt as per taste
  11. oil 2 tbsp
  12. Ghee 3 tbsp
  13. Hing 1 to 2 pinch
  14. Curry leaves 8
  15. Tomato 1
  16. Jaggry 1/2 tsp
  17. Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp
  18. bisibele bath powder ingredients:
  19. Oil 1 tsp
  20. Chana dal 2 tsp
  21. Urad dal 2 tsp
  22. Dhaniya seeds 4 tsp
  23. Clove 2
  24. Cinnamon 4 (1/2 inch size each)
  25. Kashmir red chili 5
  26. Normal red chilli 2 (for spice)
  27. Fenugreek seeds 1/8 tsp (7 seeds)
  28. Mustered seeds 1/4 tsp
  29. Cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
  30. Poppy seeds 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Boil all vegetables, toor daal, onion with salt.
  2. Cook the rice and keep it aside.
  3. Fry all the bisibele bath powder ingredients on a low flame.
  4. Grind everything to a fine powder (this is bisibele bath powder), then add coconut, water and again grind to a smooth paste.
  5. Transfer this paste to a big pan and add water, salt, jaggery. Let it boil for a few minutes. Now add cooked dal and the vegetables. Add a tablespoon of oil. Mix well and let it boil for a few more minutes. Keep stirring in between.
  6. Add rice, tamarind juice as per your taste and mix. Let it be on the stove for 5 more minutes on a low heat and then turn off the heat. Remember to stir in between.
  7. Heat 3 tbsp ghee and 1 tbsp oil in a ladle. Add hing, mustard seeds, curry leaves, tomato fry these til tomatoes soften. Put this on the bisi bele bath and mix well.
  8. Serve the Bisibele Bath with Boondi.
