Steamed spicy tempered rice flour dumplings - The rice flour is pressed in between our hand's fingers and palms. This way of holding dough means "pidi" in tamil. So it is called as Pidi Kozhukattai .

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Rice flour - 1 cup
  2. Oil - 1 tbsp
  3. Mustard seeds-0.5 tsp
  4. Cumin seeds- 0.5 tsp
  5. chana Dal- 1 tsp
  6. Dry red chillies -2
  7. Finely chopped Green chillies -3 or 5
  8. Grated ginger -1 tsp
  9. Curry leaves - few (finely chopped)
  10. water - 1.5 cup
  11. salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Heat a nonstick pan,add a tsp of oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and saute them until it splutters.
  2. Then add Chana dal, red chillies, green chillies, grated ginger and curry leaves saute them for a min.
  3. Now add 1.5 cups of water and add little salt. Allow the water to boil.
  4. When water starts boiling, switch off the flame and add rice flour little by little and stir it continuously.
  5. The hot water absorbs rice flour and it becomes thickens. Allowed it to cool for 5 min.
  6. When it is warm enough to handle, start to knead it gently with our hands to form a soft dough. It looks like this.
  7. Pinch a small balls from the dough
  8. Now pressed the dough in between our fingers and palm( like shown in pic ) This way of holding dough means "Pidi" in tamil.So it is called as Pidi Kozhukattai
  9. Arrange them in a plate.
  10. Heat a idli cooker or steamer, place those pidi kozhukktais on plates and steam it around 10 -12 min.
  11. Wait until pressure comes out and its ready!!! Enjoy hot, soft and tasty Pidi Kozhukattai with Coconut chutney or Podi
