ABOUT PIYANJI POMFRET (POMFRET ONION MASALA ) RECIPE

Pomfret Onion masala is a spicy , thick tomato based curry . It is bright red colour from the ripe red tomatoes and has a creamy smooth onion gravy . Pomfret is a very delicate , fleshy, tender and tasty fish . The spicy gravy and the deliciousness of pomfret make a perfect side dish with steam rice or jeera rice .......

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. White pomfret fish - 750 gm
  2. Onion large - 2 no ( boiled and paste )
  3. Tomato puree - 1 cup
  4. Oil - 2 tablespoons + enough oil to fry the fish
  5. Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  6. Red chilli powder - 1 1/2 teaspoon
  7. Coriander powder - 1teaspoon
  8. Cumin powder - 1teaspoon
  9. Garam masala powder - 1teaspoon
  10. Whole garam masala - 1teaspoon
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Sugar - 1tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Clean the pomfret fish . Pet dry with a kitchen towel so that there is no water on its surface .
  2. Heat enough oil in a skillet to deep fry the fish . The fish should look golden brown and cooked through . Drain the oil and remove the fish onto a plate .
  3. In another skillet , heat the 2 tablespoons of oil . Add whole garam masala and allow to splutter .
  4. Now add the boiled onion paste and fry for 2 minutes . Now add in the tomato puree mix well and cover the skillet with a lid . The onion and tomato need to be cooked well and raw smell should be gone too .
  5. When the masala are cooked and oil separates , then add in the turmeric powder , red chilli powder , coriander powder and cumin powder and mix well .
  6. Turn the heat on high and saute well for a minutes . Now add the salt and sugar in it .
  7. Now add the 1 cup of water and add the fried fish in the gravy and mix well carefully , so that the fish is coated well with the spices .
  8. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the fish to cook in the gravy for about 6 - 8 minutes in low flame . Then sprinkle the garam masala powder .
  9. The fish will absorb the flavours at this point of time .
  10. Promfret onion masala is ready to serve .
  11. Serve PROMFRET ONION MASALA WITH STEAM RICE , JEERA RICE or BUTTER NAAN of own choice ........
