ABOUT Plantain Pith(Banana stem) Thuvaram RECIPE

Vazhai thandu thuvaram is a healthy and tasty side dish. Vazhai thandu has a good source of fiber, potassium, phosphorus, B6 and calcium. Having a banana stem in our food will prevent constipation and ulcer problems as it contains lots of fiber.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 1 mediumVazhai thandu (Banana stem)
  2. 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  3. Salt to taste
  4. For the coconut paste -
  5. 1/2 cup fresh Grated Coconut
  6. 4 small onions
  7. 3 cloves of garlic
  8. 1/4 tsp Jeera
  9. For Seasoning -
  10. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  11. 1/2 tsp Urid dal
  12. 1 red chilly
  13. few curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Remove the tough outer layer of the banana stem to get the tender part.
  2. Now cut the banana stem to thin slices and use your index finger to remove the soft fiber.
  3. Then chop it evenly. Add the chopped pieces to the buttermilk.
  4. Grind the coconut, small onions, garlic, jeera and red chilly coarsely.
  5. Once again wash the chopped banana stem in running water and cook in low flame with 1/2 cup of water.
  6. When they are cooked drain the juice completely and allow it to cool. ( Do not throw the juice add some pepper and salt and have it like a soup).
  7. In a mixing bowl add the cooked banana stem, required salt, ground coconut mixture. Mix well with your hands.
  8. Heat some oil in a frying pan and add mustard.When it splutters add the urid dal, red chilly and curry leaves.Add the mixed banana stem mixture and stir it for few seconds and transfer it to the serving bowl.
