ABOUT Urad Dal Palm Jaggery Idli (Tirunelveli Special) RECIPE

This is a traditional south indian breakfast recipe . Kids will love that mild sweet taste in the idlies. Since its steamed its a healthy breakfast for all age groups.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Idly rice 1 cup
  2. Urad dal 1/4 cup
  3. Methi seeds 1/4 teaspoon
  4. Palm jaggery 1/2 cup
  5. Moong dal 2 tablespoons
  6. Grated coconut 2 tablespoons
  7. Cardomom powder 1/2 teaspoon
  8. Ghee 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Wash and Soak urad dal and methi seeds together and rice separately in sufficient water for about four hours
  2. Grind them separately into thick batter and then mix well. Allow it to ferment for about six hours .The consistency of batter should be thick.
  3. Add two tablespoons of water to palm jaggery and boil for few minutes.Then strain the impurities and allow it to cool
  4. Add this jaggery syrup to the batter along with cardomom powder and give it a good mix
  5. In a pan dry roast moongdal in medium flame until golden brown and keep aside.
  6. Grease the idly plates with ghee. Take a laddle of batter and pour it in idly mould. Sprinkle some grated coconut and roasted moongdal on top
  7. Steam cook for about twelve minutes. Insert a toothbpick and check whether its done.
