ABOUT Ven Pongal or Khara Pongal RECIPE

Ven Pongal is a spicy and savory rice pongal that is rich, healthy, delicious and savory. Specially prepared during the harvest festival of Sankranti in South India, mixed with moong dal and spices, the dish celebrates the grain which signifies a new harvest.The Ven pongal dish can be considered a one-pot meal, and enjoyed with coconut raita and achar.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1/2 cup Rice
  2. 1/2 cup Moong dal
  3. Water - 4 cups
  4. Salt to taste
  5. 1 teaspoon grated Ginger
  6. For the tempering:
  7. 2 tablespoon Ghee
  8. 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  9. A pinch of asafoetida (Hing)
  10. 8-9 curry leaves
  11. 2 green chillies, slit
  12. 1 teaspoon coarsely grounded black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and dry roast the moong daal in a pressure cooker until it is slightly fragrant.
  2. Add the rice and 4 cups of water, ginger and salt in the pressure cooker and pressure cook till done.
  3. Once cool, open the pressure cooker and slightly mash the pongal so that it is slightly mushy. Here you might be needing more water to make it runny.
  4. Heat ghee in a pan. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, green chilli and peppercorns and let them crackle for a few a seconds. Pour the tempering over the pongal.
  5. Mix before serving and simmer for a minute. Serve hot with coconut raita and achar.
