ABOUT Smoked Dal Fry... RECIPE

A super liked easily done dish in our family when it becomes difficult to think about what to cook and what not to. This recipe always comes handy and the best part is that it gets done in no time at all. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it is a divine indulgence. I have used red lentils here but any dal can be used for this aromatic and lovely dal fry.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Red lentils or masoor dal 200 gm
  2. Ginger grated 1 tbsp
  3. Garlic minced 1 tbsp
  4. Salt 1 tbsp
  5. Turmeric 1/2 tsp
  6. Green chillies chopped 3
  7. Tomatoes chopped small 2
  8. Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  9. Cumin seeds 2 tsp
  10. Asafoetida 1/8 tsp
  11. Onions sliced 2
  12. Ghee 2-3 tbsp
  13. Charcoal piece small 1
  14. Coriander leaves chopped 1/4 cup

Instructions

  1. To a cooking pot, add soaked dal, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, half of the salt, green chillies and turmeric.
  2. Let it cook with about 1 1/2 cups of water.
  3. This will be done in no time at all. Within 15-18 minutes, it will be ready for the seasoning and the final touches.
  4. Meanwhile prepare for the seasoning or the tadka.
  5. Add ghee to the seasoning pan or kadai, let it heat a bit.
  6. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  7. Add sliced onions too. Saute them until light pinkish in colour.
  8. Next add red chilli powder. Mix it well.
  9. Add this tadka to the dal.
  10. Adjust salt now.
  11. Now heat a piece of charcoal. Put it in a small bowl. Pour ghee over it and place it in the cooking pot with dal in the centre and cover it with a lid immediately.
  12. Let it sit undisturbed for 10 minutes to be precise.
  13. After the stipulated time, open the lid.
  14. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  15. The aromatic smoked dal fry is all ready to be served with rice and chapatis both.
