ABOUT Pesara Punukulu | Green Moong Dal Fritters RECIPE

In Andhra Pradesh , the green moong dal fritters are offered to god as Naivedhyam and are considered a substitute of Garelu/Vada. Pesara Punukulu ( Punugulu ) is also served as an evening snack along with a cup of hot tea/cofee. The outer texture is crispy and inside it is soft & fluffy. Once you start munching these pesara punukulu, it can be hard to stop until all the fritters are completed

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Pesalu { Green moong dal } – 1 cup
  2. Finely Chopped Onion { Optional } – 1/4 cup
  3. Green Chili ( finely chopped ) – 2 teaspoons
  4. Ginger -1 “
  5. Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  6. Curry leaf – 1 sprig
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Oil to deep fry

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak green moong dal in water for 4 to 5 hours.
  2. After atleast 5 hours , drain the water completely. Transfer the soaked dal to a dry mixie jar.
  3. Add chopped green chili, sliced ginger , salt to it and make a coarse paste. The batter should be thick and coarse in consistency. Add very little amount of water , approximately 1 or 2 tablespoons while grinding.
  4. Transfer the prepared batter to a bowl. Add cumin seeds , chopped onion (optional) & finely chopped curry leaves to the batter. Mix well.
  5. Heat oil in a pan over a medium flame. Prepare small lemon sized balls of the batter and carefully drop these in the hot oil. Fry them on both sides till they turn golden brown in color.
  6. Follow the above process for the rest of the batter.
  7. Transfer the pesara punukulu to a serving plate & serve hot.
