ABOUT Nuchinunde Traditional Breakfast Snack from Karnataka RECIPE

Nuchinunde is a traditional breakfast snack from Karnataka. Routinely enjoyed with majjige huli, this dish is a healthy snack full of proteins. It is made from dals and flavoured with leafy vegetables such as dill leaves and coriander leaves which makes it fiber rich too.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Toordal/ Tuvar Dal 1/2 cup
  2. Chana dal 1/2 cup
  3. Split moong dal 1/2 cup, I have used chilkewali moong dal here
  4. Grated coconut 1 cup
  5. Green chilies, 6-8 chopped
  6. Ginger 1 inch, chopped
  7. Turmeric - a pinch
  8. Dill leaves, finely chopped - 1 cup
  9. Coriander leaves, finely chopped - handful
  10. Coconut bits 1 tablespoon
  11. Curry leaves 1 sprig, finely chopped
  12. salt as per taste
  13. Ghee while serving the snack

Instructions

  1. Wash all the dals nicely in water and soak them for 2-3 hours.
  2. Drain all the water after the soaking time is done.
  3. In a mixer, grind the dals coarsely with green chilies, ginger and grated coconut without any water.
  4. Put the ground mixture [which should be thick in consistency] into a big bowl.
  5. Add turmeric powder, chopped dill leaves, chopped coriander leaves, chopped curry leaves, coconut bits [optional] and salt as per the taste.
  6. Mix everything well.
  7. Divide the mixture into equal portions and roll each portion into oval shaped dumplings.
  8. Place them in greased idly plate or cooker pan and steam them for 10-12 minutes.
  9. Switch off the flame and let it rest for 5 minutes before you remove them and place on serving plate.
  10. Drizzle some metled ghee on the nuchinundes and serve them hot with chutney or any accompaniment of your choice.
