ABOUT Saabudana Upma (Sago Pearl Upma) RECIPE

A healthy breakfast option that is very very easy and quick too. Adding a good amount of vegetables to it will make it even more nutritious. A perfect blend of flavours and taste, this Upma will be loved by all the family members. And not to forget the fact, that it's a comfort food by all means and happens to be my family's all time favourite. Happy Quick Breakfast Time Everyone!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 cups soaked and drained Sago
  2. 2-3 green chillies finely chopped
  3. 1 tsp Salt
  4. 1 tbsp ginger juliennes
  5. 1/2 cup roasted peanuts
  6. 2 sprigs Curry leaves
  7. 2 tbsp Bengal gram
  8. 1 tbsp Urad dal or Split Black gram
  9. 12-14 Cashewnuts lightly roasted
  10. 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  11. 1/8 tsp asafoetida
  12. 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  13. 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak Sago in considerable amount of water for at least 2 hours. This makes them super fluffy and light.
  2. In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and dry red chillies. Now add bengal gram along with Urad dal, chopped ginger and green chillies. Saute for a while and then add salt and red chilli powder
  3. Now add the soaked and drained sago to it. Mix well and cover with a lid. Let it cook on a low heat for about 15 minutes. Keep stirring it in between to avoid the formation of lumps.
  4. It will be done in 15 to 20 minutes. There is no need to add any water. Mix roasted peanuts in it as a final step. Garnish with coriander leaves and some lightly roasted Cashews for a perfect crunch and texture. Enjoy!
