ABOUT Peppery oats venna pongal RECIPE

This south Indian delicacy is normally made with rice and moong dal. Venna means ghee. Here I've made it with the healthy oats which has become an important part of our daily diet. Lots of pepper, whole and powdered helps us to free our senses. So feel lighter breathe freely be active with this tasty pongal this winter. Have it in breakfast or dinner.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Moong dal-1/4 cup
  2. Plain Oats - 2 cups
  3. Water - 4 cups or more
  4. Pepper powder - 1/2 tbsp
  5. Ghee/ venna- 2 tbsp +1 tbsp
  6. Salt to taste
  7. Tempering :
  8. Whole Pepper - 1 tbsp
  9. Red chillies - 3
  10. Green chilli - 1
  11. Ginger - 1/2 inch chopped
  12. Cashewnuts - 10 whole
  13. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  14. Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  15. Curry leaves - 2 sprigs

Instructions

  1. Boil moong dal with water, add a tbsp of ghee and the pepper powder while boiling
  2. Dry Roast the oats till pink or slighty changes colour. Keep aside
  3. Start with the tempering. Add remaining ghee to a pan.
  4. Add mustard seeds,cumin seeds. As it splutters add the cashews and saute. Add in chillies, ginger, curry leaves.
  5. Keep checking the moong dal. As it softens add the oats. Add more water if required. Cover for a minute
  6. Uncover and add the tempering, salt to season and mix well
  7. Serve hot peppery venna pongal with pickle or have by itself.
