ABOUT Red rice Tamarind Poha RECIPE

Red Rice Poha is made out of red rice and it has immense health benefits due to its gut bacteria which aids in digestion. Red Rice Tamarind Poha or Puli Aval as we call in Tamilnadu is a quick and simple recipe.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Red Rice Poha - 1 cup
  2. Tamarind - 1 lemon size
  3. Water - 1 cup
  4. Salt - as needed
  5. Peanuts - 3 teaspoon
  6. Gingelly Oil - 3 teaspoon
  7. Hing – A generous pinch
  8. Mustard – 1 teaspoon
  9. Channa dhal – 2 teaspoon
  10. Cashew nuts – 5 (Optional)
  11. Green chili - 3
  12. Curry leaves - few
  13. Turmeric – ½ teaspoon

Instructions

  1. To begin making the Red Rice Tamarind poha, soak the tamarind in 1 cup water for 10 minutes.Prepare the tamarind extract after 10 minutes by diluting it.
  2. In parallel Roast peanuts and remove its skin and set aside.
  3. Slit the green chili's into half.
  4. Wash the Red Rice Poha in running water and drain the water completely.
  5. Take a heavy bottom vessel and add Gingelly oil to it keeping the gas in low flame.
  6. Once the oil is hot, add hing powder ,mustard seeds and as they splutter add channa dhal, green chili and fry them until the channa dhal turns golden brown.
  7. Add the tamarind extract, salt, turmeric powder, roasted peanuts and curry leaves.
  8. Allow the tamarind extract to cook until the rawness disappear. The easiest way to find this is to wait for them to boil for 5 minutes.
  9. When the tamarind water is boiling add the red rice poha and toss it to coat well. Once they are coated well. Close them with a lid and let it cook for exactly 5 minutes. Switch off the gas and mix the poha once and close the lid again.
  10. Keep them closed for another 5 minutes without gas.
  11. Serve warm.
