Tamarind rice is a popular dish of tamilnadu. Its served as prasadam in most of the south Indian temples. And Ideal for travel too.
I love tamarind rice ......I normally use the ready-made mix by MTR but I'll try this out now..:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Soak the tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes and extract pulp.
Dry roast all the items separately (given under roast and powder) once cooled powder it in mixer.
Heat the oil in pan Put peanuts . Roast it over low flame.
Add mustard seeds , Bengal gram , urad dal, Asafoetida ,red chillies , turmeric powder, curry leaves and saute it for a minute or until evenly turned brown colour
Add the tamarind pulp ,salt jaggery and boil for 10 minutes.
Now add the spice powder and boil for another 5 minutes or till the oil separates, turn off the flame.
Once cooled add the rice and mix gently till the rice is nicely coated with puliodharai mix, check salt and add if needed.
Tastes best at least after an hour.
Tastes yum with fried banana , potatoes or papad.
