ABOUT Steamed lentil dumplings RECIPE

Steamed lentil dumplings is a healthy south Indian dish prepared with mixed lentils like toor dal, chana dal and moong dal, It is flavored with herbs like dill, coriander, green chilies and coconut with simple spices, to make a delicious and healthy snack. These dumplings are loaded with protein and rich in fiber. Do try and enjoy as a evening snack with coconut chutney or tomato-sauce.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Chana dal / Bengal gram – 1 cup
  2. Toor dal /pigeon peas – 1/2 cup
  3. Water as required
  4. Moong dal/yellow lintels – 1/2 cup
  5. To grind:
  6. Soaked and drained lentils
  7. Coconut – 1/2 cup
  8. Green chilies – 3
  9. Garlic – 6 to 8 cloves (optional)
  10. Ginger – 1/2 inch chopped
  11. Clove – 4 to 5
  12. Cinnamon – 2 small sticks
  13. Salt to taste
  14. Ingredients to mix with the ground paste:
  15. Onion – 3 medium finely chopped
  16. Dill leaves – 1 bunch chopped
  17. Coriander – 1 bunch chopped
  18. Mint – 1 bunch chopped
  19. Coriander powder – 2 tbsp
  20. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the lentils for 3 hours. Drain the water and grind to a paste. Avoid water, add only if required.
  2. Add chopped onion, herbs and coriander powder to the ground paste, mix together, check and adjust the salt as per your taste and keep it ready.
  3. Divide the lentil mixture into small portions and shape them into small and equal round or oval shaped dumplings.
  4. Grease a pan or steaming plate with little oil or ghee and place the dumplings in it. Steam the dumplings in a pressure cooker or a steamer for 15 minutes.
  5. Serve hot steamed hot lentil dumplings with coconut chutney or tomato sauce or with ghee
