ABOUT Fish curry with lentil dumplings RECIPE

Its a traditional bengali everyday dishes. Simple yet flavourful, this curry has the authentic flavours of a simple Maacher Jhol ( fish curry ).

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Rohu/telapia steaks/or any sweet water fish : 8 to 10 pieces
  2. Whole cumin seeds(dry roasted): 3 tsp(1 tsp for tempering and 2 tsp for cumin paste)
  3. Whole coriander seeds(dry roasted): 2 tbsp
  4. Turmeric: 1-1/2 tsp
  5. Green chili : 2( slit)
  6. Ginger paste : 1-2 inch
  7. Tomato paste
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Mustard oil to cook
  10. Lentil dumplings/Bori : a handful
  11. Coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Wash the fish properly .Dry marinate the fish pieces with salt and turmeric and keep aside for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Make a spice paste of ginger,tomato, green chilies,coriander and cumin seedsby adding very little water to the mix.
  3. Fry the lentil dumplings/bori carefully till golden brown
  4. add mustard oil and shallow fry the fish pieces.
  5. Again in the same wok heat the remaining mustard oil , add 1 tsp whole cumin seeds and let them splutter for a while and add the spice paste and add 1/2 tsp turmeric .
  6. Cook the spice paste at low to medium flame until oil leaves the side of the pan.
  7. Add boiling water and adjust salt once the gravy settles down little bit.Bring to a gentle boil.
  8. add the fried fish pieces,cover the pan and let it simmer gently.
  9. Add the fried bori/lentil dumplings & Coriander leaves to the curry . Put off the flame .Give it a standing time of 2-3 minutes and then transfer to the serving bowl.
  10. Serve the fish curry with steamed rice
