ABOUT Bisi Bela bath RECIPE

Its a popular Karnataka breakfast/ Brunch dish made with lentils and rice tempered with curry leaves mustard seeds, infused with tangy tamrind juice...It is generally served with papadam and rasam.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Ingredients For bath powder ( home made)
  2. Red chilly dry - 3
  3. Cinnamon stick -1
  4. Cloves - 2
  5. Jeera - 1 tsp
  6. urad dal - 1 tsp
  7. Chana dal - 1 tsp
  8. Methi seeds - 1/2 tsp
  9. Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
  10. Coconut powder - 1 tsp
  11. Ingredients for bath:
  12. Rice - 2 cups
  13. Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  14. Tamrind - 20 gm
  15. Jaggery - 1-1/2 tsp
  16. Common salt - according to taste
  17. Green Peas - 1/4 cup
  18. Capsicum - 1/4 cup (optional)
  19. Carrots - diced -1/2 cup
  20. Pure ghee - 2 tsp
  21. Curry leaves - 10-15
  22. Cashews - 10-15
  23. Hing - 1/4 tsp
  24. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp

Instructions

  1. Preparation of bisi bela bath powder
  2. Dry roast all the ingredients one after the another
  3. Cool them and set aside
  4. Make then a fine powder in mixer grinder
  5. Wash and soak rice for 10 mins
  6. Soak Tamrind in half cup of water.
  7. Squeeze and filter it
  8. Add bisi bela bath powder, jaggery, common salt to the Tamrind juice and mix well and set aside
  9. Pressure cook rice - 7 mins
  10. Pressure cook toor dal - 7 mins
  11. Mash dal and add to cooked rice
  12. Heat a pan with 1 tsp pure ghee
  13. Add above mentioned vegetables and saute for 3-4 mins
  14. Pour 1 cup water and cook till vegetables become tender
  15. Pour Tamarind mixture and stir well, allow to boil for 3-4 mins
  16. Add mashed dal and rice to above mixture.
  17. Add 1 cup water and simmer it for 1-2 minutes
  18. In a pan add 1 tsp pure ghee and heat.
  19. Add mustard seeds, hing, chana and urad dal and allow to splutter.
  20. Add dry red chilly and curry leaves and switch off gas flame
  21. Pour this seasoning over bisi bela bath
  22. Serve this with Papadam and rasam
