It's my mother in law's recipe, mostly kids and adults too, don't like to eat sponge gourd.. then its a best way to make them eat this gilka daal

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 250 gram sponge gourd (gilka)
  2. 1 cup yellow moong daal
  3. 2 medium sized tomato
  4. 1 onion
  5. 1 tsp garlic paste
  6. 2 tsp ginger chilli paste
  7. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  8. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  10. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  11. Pinch of asafoetida
  12. 1 tsp garam masala
  13. 2 tbsp oil
  14. 1 sprig curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Soak the daal for 30 minutes by washing twice and keep aside
  2. Meantime cut the tomatoes and onions and peel off sponge gourd and cut it into desired size pieces and keep aside
  3. After 30 minutes heat a pressure cooker and add oil in it
  4. Add mustard seeds cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and onion and saute till onion become translucent
  5. Add ginger chilli paste and garlic paste, red chilli powder and turmeric powder, then add tomatoes and cook till oil leaves
  6. Add salt and garam masala and then sponge gourd
  7. Mix it properly and then add soaked dal in it
  8. Add water as we normally add in our regular dal (according to your choice of thickness)
  9. Close the lid of cooker and cook upto 2 whistles
  10. When pressure release naturally, open the lid serve hot with rice and pulka
