ABOUT Kathal Masala RECIPE

A spicy Indian vegetable preparation, kathal masala is basically unripe jackfruit, also known as kathal cooked in a spicy masaledaar gravy. Enjoy the kathal masala with roti.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 500 gms jackfruit
  2. Oil for deep frying
  3. 2 onions, pureed/ finally chopped
  4. 3 tsp coriander powder
  5. 1 tsp chilli powder
  6. 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  7. 1/2 cup tomato puree
  8. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds powder
  9. 1 tsp garam masala
  10. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
  12. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel and cut the kathal in 4 cms cubes.Heat the oil in a kadhai and deep fry the kathal till they turn light brown form all the sides.Drain on an absorbent paper and keep aside.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan, add the onion paste and saute till it turns golden brown.Add the ginger-garlic paste and the tomatoe puree and saute for another 5 minutes.
  3. Add all the masalas and saute till the oil floats on top.Add the fried kathal pieces and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Add salt and 1/2 cup water, mix well and cook till it becomes dry or like a thick masala.
  5. Simmer till the kathal is cooked and thick masala coat the kathal.
  6. Add the coriander and serve hot.
