ABOUT South Indian Style Dal Palak RECIPE

A traditional South Indian gravy made out of palak and toor dal.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Palak - 250 grams
  2. Toor dal - 50 grams, boiled
  3. Sambar onions - 10 nos
  4. Garlic - 4 to 5 pieces
  5. Dry red chillies - 2 to 3 nos
  6. Tomato - 1 nos
  7. Oil - 1 tablespoon, for frying
  8. Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  9. Jeera - 1 teaspoon
  10. Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  11. Hing - 1 pinch
  12. Turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon
  13. Curry leaves - 1 strand
  14. Salt - as per taste

Instructions

  1. Boil and cook the toor dal in a pressure cooker till 1 whistle blows.
  2. Heat oil (I used coconut or sesame oil) in a kadai. Add in the mustard seeds, jeera, pepper, hing and allow it to splutter.
  3. Then add the onions, garlic and dry red chillies, fry it for a few minutes. Add the roughly chopped tomato and fry till the raw smell goes away.
  4. Then add the roughly blanched palak and fry it for a few minutes.
  5. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool.
  6. Now grind this mixture coarsely in a mixer/grinder. (Usually one quick round will do.)
  7. Heat a kadai. Add in the boiled toor dal and palak mixture, bring it to a boil. Turn off the stove.
  8. Serve it hot with rice or rotis.

It's a delicious recipe. But you're missing to add some steps on to add the turmeric, curry leaves, etc.
