Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Dumplings
  2. Chana dal 1/4 cup
  3. Toor dal 1/4 cup
  4. 3 red chilies
  5. 2 green chilies
  6. Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  7. 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  8. Coriander leaves 3 tbsp , chopped
  9. Hing - 1 pinch
  10. Salt to taste
  11. For gravy
  12. 1 Lemon sized tamarind
  13. Onion 2 big, pureed
  14. Tomatoes 2-3, pureed
  15. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  16. Sambar powder 2 tbsp
  17. 1/2 shell coconut, grated
  18. Salt to taste
  19. 3 tbsp Coriander leaves to garnish
  20. For tempering
  21. Oil 1 tbsp
  22. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  23. Fennel seeds 1/2 tsp
  24. Methi seeds 1/2 tsp
  25. Curry leaves 6-7
  26. 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  27. 2 red chilies, broken

Instructions

  1. SOAK LEMON SIZE TAMARIND IN WARM WATER FOR 30 MINUTES AND EXTRACT JUICE. KEEP IT ASIDE
  2. ADD 1/4 CUP CHANA DAL IN A BOWL
  3. ADD 1/4 CUP TOOR DAL
  4. SOAK FOR 2 HOURS WITH 3 RED CHILIES
  5. DRAIN EXCESS WATER. ADD 2 GREEN CHILIES TO DALS
  6. ADD 1/2 TSP TURMERIC POWDER
  7. ADD 1/4 TSP HING
  8. ADD 1 TSP FENNEL SEEDS
  9. ADD REQUIRED SALT
  10. GRIND DAL MIX TO COARSE PASTE WITHOUT ADDING WATER
  11. ADD CORIANDER LEAVES. MIX WELL
  12. SHAPE THE MIXTURE INTO LEMON SIZED BALLS
  13. STEAM BALLS FOR 10 MINUTES. TOOTHPICK INSERTED INTO CENTER SHOULD COME OUT CLEAN. KEEP IT ASIDE
  14. HEAT OIL IN A PAN. CRACKLE MUSTARD SEEDS
  15. ADD 1 TSP FENNEL SEEDS
  16. ADD 1/2 TSP METHI
  17. ADD CURRY LEAVES AND 2 GREEN CHILIES
  18. ADD 2 RED CHILIES. SAUTE FOR 1 MINUTE
  19. ADD 2 BIG ONIONS PUREED AND MIX
  20. SAUTE TILL RAW AROMA DISAPPEARS
  21. ADD 3 TOMATOES PUREED
  22. SAUTE FOR 3-4 MINUTES
  23. ADD 1/4 TSP TURMERIC POWDER
  24. ADD 2 TBSP SAMBAR POWDER
  25. ADD SALT AND MIX WELL
  26. SAUTE FOR 1 MINUTE
  27. ADD TAMARIND EXTRACT AND MIX WELL. BRING TO BOIL
  28. ADD PREPARED DUMPLINGS AND GENTLY MIX
  29. ADD GRATED COCONUT
  30. MIX WELL
  31. COOK TILL OIL SEPARATES AND DUMPLINGS FLOAT
  32. GARNISH WITH CORIANDER LEAVES. SERVE HOT
