I am feeling elated to share this age old traditional , most captivating recipe . Tamil Nadu ‘s most adored candy . Most common among villagers and sadly , today ‘s modern children doesn’t even know about this . Our traditional recipes always carried loads of nutrients and these honey candies are one among them . These candies are made using urad dal with no fashion preservatives . Old is always gold. Isn’t ?

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. White urad dal 1/4 cup
  2. Sugar 2 cups
  3. Water 1 cup
  4. baking powder 3/4 teaspoon
  5. Edible food colour a pinch
  6. Oil for Deep frying
  7. Powdered sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak urad dal for 3 hours .
  2. Grind urad dal with less water to a smooth bonda batter consistency . The batter shouldn’t be too tight nor too loose . Should be in holding state.
  3. Add pinch of edible colour to the prepared batter .
  4. Add baking powder .
  5. Mix all together to a smooth batter .
  6. Meanwhile , heat 1 cup water in a pan .
  7. Add 2 cups sugar to the boiling water .
  8. Keep stirring till sugar dissolves completely .
  9. Allow the sugar syrup to boil for 5 minutes .
  10. Switch off the flame .
  11. Now heat oil for deep frying in a wok.
  12. Hold small balls ought of the batter and drop into the hot oil .
  13. Wet your fingers each time before holding balls .
  14. Fry both sides till the balls turn crispy .
  15. Add the fried balls to the warm sugar syrup .
  16. Allow the balls to soak in the syrup for 15 minutes .
  17. Transfer the soaked candies to a plate .
  18. Sprinkle powdered sugar .
  19. Serve after bringing to room temperature
