ABOUT Rava Upma RECIPE

This is a very common breakfast in most of the South Indian homes. It is a signature dish of South India and completes a mini tiffin meal where it is included along with idli, dosa, medu vada, pongal and kesari bhaat. It is also a regular breakfast menu at my place. Country.....UAE.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 3/4 cup rava (semolina)
  2. 1 tbsp. oil
  3. 1 onion, chopped
  4. 1 tsp. ginger, chopped
  5. 2 green chilies, chopped
  6. 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  7. 1 sprig curry leaves
  8. 1 tsp. split urad dal
  9. 1 tbsp. chana dal
  10. salt to taste
  11. 1 tsp. lime juice
  12. 1 tsp. ghee
  13. coconut chutney to serve
  14. idli podi to garnish
  15. coriander leaves to garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds. After it stops spluttering, add the urad dal and saute till it changes colour.
  2. Then add the onion, ginger, green chilies and curry leaves. Saute till light brown. Add the rava and salt. Fry on low flame till it is lightly browned.
  3. Add 3 cups water and simmer on low flame till it turns thick. Add the lime juice and ghee. Mix well and sprinkle some idli podi over it.
  4. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with any chutney of your choice.
