ABOUT Whole Wheat Veggie Pizza RECIPE

Whole wheat pizza is a perfect alternative to the regular pizza, it is oaded with fibre and nutritions. Every kid loves pizzas, but how far is it healthy? I always felt guilty internally whenever my kids asked for it, so I tried my hands on making an healthier version. To my surprise this tastes much better than regular ones!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the sauce:
  2. 3 Tomatoes, blanched
  3. 3 tbsp Tomato puree ( I used store bought one)
  4. 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
  5. 5 to 6 large Garlic cloves
  6. 2 tbsp Butter/ Olive oil
  7. 1 tsp Oregano ( dried italian herb)
  8. 1 tsp Thyme (dried italian herb)
  9. 1 tsp dried basil or a handful of fresh basil leaves
  10. Pepper to taste
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1 tsp red chilli flakes or red chilli powder
  13. 1 tbsp sugar (to balance the sourness of tomato and to enrich the color)
  14. For the pizza crust/dough:
  15. 1 and 1/2 cups Whole wheat flour/Atta
  16. 1 and 1/2 cups All purpose flour /Maida
  17. 1 and 1/4 cup Luke warm water ( just above body temperature)
  18. 2 tbsp honey
  19. 2 tbsp olive oil
  20. 1 tsp Salt
  21. 2 tsp Instant Dry Yeast
  22. 1 tsp sugar
  23. For the toppings:
  24. You can use any according to your preference. I have used tomatoes, onions, pickled olives, mushrooms, peppers, pineapple, grated mozarella and cheddar for the cheese.

Instructions

  1. For the sauce preparation, in a pan add butter or olive oil to heat, once hot add the minced garlic and saute for a minute. Now add the chopped onions and continue frying until they are soft and slightly caramelised.
  2. Next, add the pepper powder, thyme, oregano, salt, chilli flakes/powder, basil leaves and stir. After a minute, add chopped tomatoes, stir and cover with a lid to cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy. Stir in the tomato puree and sugar, mix well and cook for a minute or two until the oil starts oozing out.
  3. For the crust preparation, in a bowl take the luke warm water and add sugar and yeast into it. Mix well until the yeast is foamy and activated.
  4. In another wide bowl, take the flours and add the salt, honey and olive oil. Take the proofed yeast and add it to the flour mix and knead until a dough is formed, now transfer this onto a slightly floured counter top and gently knead it for 10 mins.
  5. After kneading, transfer it back to the greased bowl. Smear the top with a little bit of oil, cover the bowl with a damp cloth and set aside in a warm place for an hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Now divide this into 2 equal portions and roll into desired shapes. (I used a deep pan to make the pan pizza.) Smear the pan with olive oil and level the dough in the pan.
  7. Now spread the pizza sauce on it as much or as little you want. For the toppings I have used tomatoes, onions, olives, mushroom , peppers and pineapple pieces. Get creative and add according to your choice. Once the veggies are spread, sprinkle some grated cheese, I have used mozarella and cheddar cheeses.
  8. Bake this in a preheated oven at 180°C or 325°F for 22 to 25 mins or until the cheese melts and a golden crust is formed.
