ABOUT Daal Chana Fry... RECIPE

A lovely dal fry recipe from Pakistan that is a regular feature at our home especially for dinner. This dal fry is just mindblowingly delicious. Easy to cook and goes well with naans or chapatis. Spicy and a little bit on the tangy side too due to tomatoes. Serve this with cabbage and onion salad.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Bengal gram or chana dal 2 cups
  2. Ginger mince 1 tbsp
  3. Garlic mince 1 tsp
  4. Garlic cloves 2
  5. Red chilli powder 1 tbsp
  6. Turmeric 1/2 tsp
  7. Salt 1 tbsp
  8. Oil 1 tbsp + 2 tbsp
  9. Onions finely chopped 2
  10. Tomatoes finely chopped 2
  11. Green chillies finely chopped 2
  12. Cloves 8
  13. Blackpepper corns 12
  14. Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  15. Coriander powder 1 tsp
  16. Garam masala 1 tsp
  17. Coriander leaves finely chopped 1/4th cup

Instructions

  1. Soak dal for 2-3 hours and pressure cook using little water.
  2. Do not over cook the dal. It should be firm yet soft.
  3. In a cooking pan, heat oil and saute onions until light pink in colour.
  4. Next add tomatoes and all the spices.
  5. Saute until oil starts separating.
  6. Now add the boiled dal along with cloves, blackpepper corns and cumin seeds.
  7. Also add about 1 cup of water.
  8. Cover and cook for 15 minutes on medium high heat.
  9. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil and add thinly sliced garlic cloves and fry until light brown. Add this tempering to the dal.
  10. Garnish with chopped coriander and garam masala.
  11. Serve hot with naans for a scrumptious meal.
