ABOUT Palakkad Vaazhakka Molakushyam RECIPE

A very tasty Palakkad(Kerala) style side dish for rice made with raw banana, dal and pepper as the main ingredients.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Raw banana 3 peeled&chopped into medium sized dices
  2. Moong dal/Toor dal/mix of both dals 1/3 cup
  3. Pepper powder 1 tsp
  4. Pepper crushed 3 tsp or as req.
  5. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  6. Green chilli 1 big
  7. Jaggery a small piece
  8. Curry leaves 1 small sprig
  9. Salt as req.
  10. Water as req.
  11. Coconut oil 1 tsp or more

Instructions

  1. Cook the raw banana with turmeric powder, green chilli, jaggery, half of the curry leaves, salt, and enough water in a kadai.
  2. Meanwhile, cook the dal with enough water in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles and mash it well. Set this aside.
  3. When the raw banana mix starts to boil, add the pepper powder and again cook till the banana is well cooked.
  4. Now, add the moongdal and mix very well.
  5. When the mix slightly thickens, add the crushed pepper, remaining curry leaves, and finally pour the coconut oil, mix and switch off the stove.
  6. Your Palakkad style Molakushyam is ready to be served with hot rice!!
