ABOUT Mutton Thakkadi RECIPE

Typical traditional muslim breakfast in Nellai district, Tamil Nadu. Made by roasted rice flour dumplings soaked in mutton masala gravy.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Roasted rice flour( puttu maavu) -500 gm
  2. Plain rice flour -50 gm
  3. Mutton pieces -500 gram
  4. Chopped big onion -1
  5. Ginger garlic paste -2 tbsp
  6. Yogurt -2 tbsp
  7. Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
  8. Curry masal powder - 2 -3 tbsp
  9. Shallots chopped -1/4 kg
  10. Grated coconut - 1 cup
  11. Green chilli chopped -3
  12. Chopped coriander,curry leaves - a handful
  13. Oil - 4 tbsp
  14. Salt to taste.

Instructions

  1. Rinse and drain the mutton pieces. Marinate the mutton pieces with curd,salt and curry masal powder. Keep aside for half an hour. Heat oil in a pressure cooker,add chopped onion,fry till golden brown add ginger garlic paste and garam masala,
  2. Saute well in a low flame.
  3. Then add the marinated mutton,mix well. Add 5 cups of water .Cook on medium flame for 5 whistles. Switch off the stove.
  4. While mutton is cooking, In a wide vessel add roasted rice flour,plain rice flour , chopped shallots,chopped green chilli,coriander & curry leaves,grated coconut ,little salt and mix well. Keep aside.
  5. Transfer the cooked mutton to the big thakkadi making vessel.
  6. Pour the half gravy of the curry to the rice flour dumpling mix.
  7. Mix well and check the salt. Now make big lemon sized dumplings(balls )or kozhukattai from the gravy mixed rice flour dough. Keep aside a half cup of gravy mixed rice flour dough to add finally.
  8. Add 1:4 (flour )measure of water to the gravy ,now the mutton gravy looks like soup. Let it boil in a high flame. Now add the dumplings one by one. Close with lid. Don't stir.
  9. Allow it to cook on medium high flame till done. Now add the dumpling flour mix we already kept aside. Now stir gently.
  10. After adding the flour mix,reduce the flame and allow it to cook for 10 minutes, Turn off the stove finally.
  11. Now mutton thakkadi is ready to serve. Pour thick gravy with dumplings and mutton pieces in a plate and serve.
