ABOUT Doi Bhetki Curry RECIPE

Doi Bhetki is a mildly spiced flavorful Bengali fish curry, where fish steaks cooked in a yogurt based gravy. I love this fish for its own unique taste and less bones. Try this version of Bhetki; you’ll love the taste and flavor of this simple, yet delicious fish curry!

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Whole Bhetki fish - 2 (500 gm)
  2. Yogurt 1/2 cup
  3. Chopped Onion 1/2 cup
  4. Green chillies 5-6
  5. Ginger garlic paste 2 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  7. Cumin powder 1 tsp
  8. Coriander powder 2 tsp
  9. Red chili powder 1 tsp
  10. Garam masala powder 1 tsp
  11. Black pepper powder 1 tsp
  12. Bay leaf 2
  13. 3-4 cardamom
  14. Mustard oil 1 cup
  15. Salt to taste
  16. 2-3 cloves

Instructions

  1. Mix turmeric , red chili powder and salt in a bowl. Add cleaned fish to the spice mix and marinate for 30 minutes
  2. Grind onions, green chilies, ginger, and garlic with little water to form smooth paste
  3. Heat oil in a wide pan. Fry one fish at a time on medium heat, cook on both sides. Remove and drain excess oil from fish on paper towel.
  4. Now, add 2 tablespoon of the same oil to a heavy bottomed pan. Add cloves, cardamom and bay leaf.
  5. Add the ground paste and saute until the raw aroma goes away. This will take about 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Now add the spice powders into the pan and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes. Add 1 cup water, mix well and bring it to boil.
  7. Add in whisked yogurt, salt and gently mix. Bring it to boil on high flame. Simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  8. Add fried fish into the curry and cook for another 5 minutes. Switch off and serve hot with rice
