ABOUT Karela 65 (Bittergourd 65) RECIPE

This name spells a big no no and many of us actually run away from this vegetable. But in reality this is a nature's wonder and when cooked accordingly can really please our palate a lot. This is an amazing version of it and is just as delish as it's famous counterpart. It has many medicinal benefits too. Though it may not be liked by the kids, but by presenting this most unliked veggie as innovatively as possible by us mothers can really bring a drastic change in the way they look at it. Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. FOR BOILING...
  2. Bottlegourd 3 thinly sliced
  3. Turmeric 1 tsp
  4. Tamarind pulp or a small piece equal to half of a lemon
  5. FOR THE COATING AND FRYING...
  6. Water 1/4 th cup or as required
  7. Salt to taste
  8. all purpose flour 3 tbsp
  9. Cornflour 2 tbsp
  10. chilli powder 1 tsp
  11. Garam masala 1 tsp
  12. Soy sauce 1 tsp
  13. FOR THE SAUCE...
  14. Garlic mince 1 tsp
  15. Ginger mince 1 tsp
  16. Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  17. Red food colour 2 pinches
  18. Soy sauce 1 tsp
  19. Beaten curd 4 tbsp
  20. Curry leaves few
  21. oil 2 tbsp
  22. Coriander seeds crushed 1 tsp
  23. Salt 1/2 tsp
  24. Green chillies finely chopped 1 tbsp (optional)
  25. Kasoori Methi 1 tsp
  26. Coriander leaves finely chopped 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. First of all slice the bittergourd into round slices.
  2. Peel them as desired and remove the seeds too.
  3. Now boil them for 5 minutes to remove the bitterness.
  4. This step is done to make them a bit free of their bitterness.
  5. After boiling, drain and set aside.
  6. To these slices add the ingredients listed under coating and frying them. Make a thick batter just like that of pakora batter.
  7. Fry them until crisp on medium flame.
  8. Set these aside.
  9. In a pan, heat oil and add the curry leaves.
  10. Next add the other ingredients one by one and saute on a low flame.
  11. Add the curd at last along with food colour.
  12. Now add the fried bittergourd slices to this sauce and mix well.
  13. There is no need to cook the sauce much. It is done in 7 to 8 minutes.
  14. Garnish with some chopped coriander.
  15. Serve hot with rice or rotis or as it is just as an appetizer too.
