This is my mother's recipe which i have loved since my childhood.this is a simple curry made with sauteed onions cooked in a spicy coconut and poppy seeds base gravy .this curry can be served as a side dish with both rice and phulka.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Onions large 5
  2. Poppy seeds 2 tablespoons
  3. Freshly grated coconut 1/2 cup
  4. Garlic 10 fat cloves
  5. Dried red chilles 3
  6. Tamarind 1 small lime size
  7. Grated jaggery 1 teaspoon
  8. Cinnamon one small stick
  9. salt as per taste
  10. Cloves 4
  11. Black pepper 4
  12. Cardamom 2
  13. fennel seeds 1 teaspoon
  14. Panch phoran 1 teaspoon
  15. Dried fenugreek leaves 1 tablespoon
  16. Oil 3 tablespoons
  17. Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan
  2. Add panch phoran.when panch phoran splutters add curry leaves.
  3. Cut the onions into julliens and add into the pan
  4. Add some salt for faster cooking of onions
  5. While the onion is cooking in a jar take coconut,poppy seeds,garlic,cinnamon, cloves,black pepper,fennel seeds,cardamom dry red chillies and tamarind and grind to a fine paste using little water
  6. When the onions turn soft add the paste and cook till the paste starts giving fragrance
  7. Now add turmeric powder and jaggery
  8. Now add some water cook till the gravy thickens
  9. Crush the dried fenugreek leaves and add to the curry
  10. Cook for another 5 minutes and serve hot with rice or phulka
