ABOUT Arvi Ka Khatta Saalan..(Colocasia in Tomato and Tamarind gravy) RECIPE

A tangy super delicious side dish of Hyderabad City. It can be made with mutton also. Colocasia is simmered in a thick tomato and tamarind gravy with simple spices and is best enjoyed with mutton fry or Mutton Kadai.Simple comfort food.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Colocasia or Arvi 1/2 kg
  2. Tomato paste 200gm
  3. Salt to taste
  4. Garlic mince 1 tbsp
  5. Red chilli powder 1 tbsp
  6. Red chilli flakes 1 tsp
  7. Green chillies whole 2 to 3
  8. Coriander crushed coarsely 1 tbsp
  9. Cumin crushed coarsely 1 tsp
  10. Coriander leaves chopped a handful
  11. Curry leaves few
  12. Tamarind a handful soaked
  13. Oil 4 tbsp
  14. Turmeric 1/2tsp
  15. Onion paste of 2 large ones
  16. Bay leaves 3
  17. Cardamom pods 3 to 4
  18. Black pepper corns crushed 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the skin of the colocasia with a kitchen knife.
  2. Oil your hands before doing so, as this will prevent from any itching whatsoever.
  3. Cut each horizontally into two from the centre.
  4. In a deep cooking pot, heat the oil.
  5. Add the curry leaves, bay leaves, crushed cardamom pods, peppercorns and garlic mince.
  6. After a minute, add the onion paste.
  7. Saute it well until the raw smell fades away.
  8. Now add the Colocasia.
  9. Next add in all the spices too.
  10. Cumin and coriander seeds should be roasted slightly before pounding.
  11. Next, add the tomato paste and allow it to simmer.
  12. Cover the pot and the flame should be low.
  13. After around 15 minutes, add the tamarind water.
  14. Tamarind should be soaked in about a cup of water and then squeezed to take out the pulp.
  15. Add more water if desired.
  16. Adding tamarind should be according to your family's preference.
  17. Feel free to add more or less.
  18. Allow it to simmer again for around 10 minutes.
