ABOUT Hyderabadi Shahjahani Meetha (Tomato Halwa) RECIPE

A long lost recipe from the Hyderabadi Cuisine, this one is sure to steal your hearts. Tomatoes in halwa, yes ! you have heard it right. This tantalizing refreshing halwa was the most common sight at the parties and special occasions much before during the Nizam's rule and even until late 70's. But later on it became a completely forgotten and a neglected one to say. The goodness of tomatoes combined with mawa, dry fruits and ghee or butter creates a sensational halwa that tickles your tastebuds. Happy Dessert Time Folks!

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Tomatoes 300gm (less tangy ones)
  2. Mawa 75 gm
  3. Sugar 60gm
  4. Ghee or butter 80 gm
  5. Cardamom powder 1/2 tsp
  6. For homemade mawa- 500 ml milk
  7. Dry fruits of choice 1/4 cup
  8. Beetroot paste (optional) 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. First of all blanch the tomatoes in hot boiling water for 15-20 mins.
  2. Peel off the skin after it cools down and mash them well.
  3. In a deep non stick wok, make mawa by reducing the milk on high flame. Keep stirring all the while and scraping from the sides until a solid mass is obtained.
  4. In a pan, heat butter or ghee and add the mashed tomatoes, cardamom powder, sugar and the mawa.
  5. Keep stirring it well and the flame should be on medium high until the ghee starts leaving the sides of the pan and a nice aroma emanates in the kitchen. It should take about 25 to 30 mins. Add the food colour if desired at this point before switching off the flame. I did not use the colour. Also beetroot paste can be used to enhance the colour.
  6. Serve it well garnished with dry fruits of your choice. It tastes awesome when served chilled. However you can serve it warm also.
