ABOUT Moong dal (green gram) chutney RECIPE

Moong dal chutney in one of the common chutneys which my mother used to prepare every week. I have very fond memories of eating this chutney with relish along with hot rice, a dab of oil and a bite of raw onion! In Telugu, this chutney is called, ‘Pesaru pacchadi’. This is a very simple ‘no cook’ chutney!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 Cup Moong Dal
  2. 3-4 red chillies
  3. 1 tablespoon tamarind paste or
  4. Juice of 1 lemon
  5. salt as per taste
  6. For Seasoning:
  7. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  8. a pinch of asafetida

Instructions

  1. Soak moong dal (green gram dal) in water for 20-30 minutes. Add the chillies (broken into pieces) to a blender and grind finely.
  2. Drain and add the soaked moong dal to this and grind. Add the tamarind paste, little water, salt and grind. Based on your preference you can either grind it to a fine paste or to a coarse mixture.
  3. Tamarind can be replaced with juice of one lemon too.
  4. Adding seasoning to this chutney is optional. However, if you prefer to add it, heat oil, add mustard seeds. Let these splutter. Add asafetida, mix and turn off the heat.
