ABOUT Bata Fish curry RECIPE

Bata fish is very common in West Bengal, every true bong fish lovers love to eat Bata fish curry.This Bata fish curry is authentically from my grandma s kitchen.I learnt it from my mother, this recipe has been passed down through the generations.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Bata fish - 4
  2. Potato- 1 cut into length wise
  3. Onion seeds / kalonji- 1/2 tsp
  4. Ginger Paste - 1 tsp
  5. Green chilli -2
  6. Turmeric Powder- 1 tsp
  7. Chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
  8. Cumin Powder- 1 tsp
  9. Salt - as required
  10. mustard oil - 5 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Marinate fish with 1 tsp turmeric and salt .
  2. Then heat Kadhai with 4 tbsp mustard oil and fry Bata fish on both sides until brown in medium low flame. Take out from kadai and keep aside.
  3. Again heat kadai with remaining oil, if need you can add 1 - 2 tbsp oil.
  4. Then add onion seeds / kalonji, add slit green chilies. Now add potatoes, fry it little.
  5. Now take a bowl ,add ginger paste ,1tsp turmeric ,chilli ,cumin powder ,salt to taste.Add 2tbsp water and make a paste.
  6. Add this paste into the kadai, stirring for a minute, then add a cup water..bring to boil the gravy.reduce flame on low fire for 6-7 mins.cover kadai. Or cook until potatoes cook well.
  7. Then add fried Bata fish into the runny gravy (Jhol in Bengali term). Keep cooking for another 3-4 mins..
  8. Keep the consistency of gravy as per your choice, authentically gravy should be runny.
  9. Check seasoning, serve it with steamed rice.
  10. Note ---- I did not use tomatoes as my grandma never used tomatoes.if you want you can add tomato...
