ABOUT Rice mix bitter gourd gravy RECIPE

A tasty recipe from my maternal grandmother.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Bitter gourd - 200 gms ( slice them fine...remove seeds and soak in butter milk to leave away bitterness )
  2. Onion - 1 large sliced fine
  3. Tomato - 1 large sliced fine
  4. Gram dal - 1 tsp
  5. Mustard - 1 tsp
  6. Curry leaves - 1 hand full ( cleaned and washed)
  7. Coriander - 2 tbsp ( cleaned ,washed and chopped fine)
  8. Chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  9. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tbsp
  10. Dhaniya powder - 1 1/2 tbsp
  11. Jaggery - 1 1/2 tbsp ( powdered)
  12. Tamarind juice - 1 tbsp ( thick)
  13. Salt required
  14. Oil - 3 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Use the appropriate amount mentioned for yummy taste.
  2. Heat a kadai with oil mentioned, then temper mustard.Let splutter.Add gram dal, when there colour turns slight brown add curry leaves, then add onion saute till transparent.Then add tomato to cook till gets soft.
  3. Wash off bitter gourd soaked in butter milk and add these to the kadai, keep sauting for 2-3 minutes.The colour of bitter gourd will change slightly.
  4. By this time add 1/2 tumbler of water and chilli powder, dhaniya powder, turmeric powder,tamarind juice, jaggery....leave it in slow flame.Bitter gourd will get cooked in it.
  5. When the water reduces to about just 1 tbsp, keep stirring to avoid getting burnt.Now again cook well, it will become a gravy, add coriander and remove from flame.
  6. Now mix with white rice and it also tastes yummy with rasam rice or curd rice.
  7. Its soo sooo tasty..

lovely tip of soaking the karela in buttermilk..never heard of this before
