ABOUT Thengai Suduthal / Fire Roasted Coconut RECIPE

Today is Aadi 1 ,the first day of Tamil month Aadi. Most of the People in South india have culture to make this coconut filled with sweet stuffing during this tamil month Aadi.After cooking the coconut,in evening we offer it to god Ganesha / Amman.Its time consuming to make it but worth to try it.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Coconut - 1
  2. Turmeric Powder - 2 tsp (to coat the coconut )
  3. Kumkum -as needed
  4. Large bamboo stick -1 (Soak in water for 30 mins )
  5. Tamarind -gooseberry size
  6. For Stuffing :
  7. Raw rice -2 tbsp
  8. Cardamom -2
  9. Grated Jaggery -3 tbsp
  10. Poha -1 tbsp (i used red poha)
  11. Moong dal -1 tbsp
  12. Fried gram dal -1 tbsp
  13. Sesame seeds -1/2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. *Dry roast the ingredients seperately except poha ,jaggeryand cardamom. Then Grind to a coarse powder the ingredients everything.
  2. Take the coconut,just grate the coconut to remove the coir to make it completely smooth.
  3. Make a small hole at the top of the coconut.Drain the water from it.Keep it aside
  4. Add the mixture into coconut through the hole .Use sharp stick to push it inside ( i used screw driver).
  5. Add little coconut water in between.At one stage the coconut water comes out,at this stage stop filling it.
  6. Apply turmeric on whole coconut and bamboo stick.and decorate it with kumkum on the coconut wherever needed.Insert the bamboo stick,sealed it with little turmeric powder &tamarind .
  7. Keep the coconut on the gas burner,Switch on the flame,roast the coconut on all sides.
  8. Adjust the flame whenever needed,it will take nearly 15 -20 mins.Keep turning the coconut whenever needed,While roasting the water stuffed in coconut may be spill,dont panic it
  9. Coconut turns black colour and it will get big crack at one side.at ths stage stop roasting it & switch off the flame .
  10. Offer this roasted coconut to God and pray all our wishes to come true !!Then break the coconut ,remove the shells carefully.Eat the coconut pieces with stuffing ,it tastes heaven !!
