Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For dough
  2. rice flour 1 cup
  3. water 1 cup
  4. Pinch of salt
  5. sugar 1 teaspoon
  6. ghee 1 tablespoon
  7. for modak stuffing
  8. fresh coconut shredded 1 cup
  9. Jaggery 3/4 th cup
  10. Dry roasted sesame seeds (til) 1 tablespoon
  11. Dry roasted poppy seeds (Khaskhas) 1/2 tablespoon
  12. ghee 1 tablespoon
  13. cardamom powder 1/2 teaspoon
  14. nutmeg powder 1/2 teaspoon
  15. finely chopped mixed dry fruits (almonds, cashew nuts, raisins and Pistachios) 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. To prepare dough , take a heavy bottom container and add water, pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of ghee
  2. allow it to boil
  3. add rice flour to the boiling water, mix well and switch off the heat and cover it with lid, for next 5 to 10 minutes
  4. Now take out the steamed rice flour and make it soft by adding little water and ghee , till it is smooth in texture
  5. For making stuffing for Modak, dry roast poppy seeds and sesame seeds till Golden and set aside
  6. heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan and add jaggery and freshly shreded coconut
  7. Cook mixture on low heat till, jaggery melts
  8. Now add roasted sesame seeds and poppy seeds and mix well
  9. Now , add finely chopped mixed dry fruits, cardamom powder and nutmeg powder. Mix well and the stuffing for modak is ready, let it cool for sometime
  10. Now, for preparing Modaks, take the small ball of ready dough, flatten it with hands and make small Puri
  11. Put, 1 to 2 teaspoons of ready stuffing in Puri and start folding the puri from corners the corners by giving it pleats or multiple folds
  12. Give it the shape of modak and gently and carefully seal it on the top, so that stuffing should not come out
  13. Like wise prepare all the Modaks
  14. Take Modak Patra (traditional Modak Patra or steamer) steamer, idli maker or dhokla maker
  15. Add some water to steamer and heat it
  16. Line it with wet cloth or a banana leaf lined with some ghee
  17. Place all the Modaks on it , cover it with lid .
  18. Steam them for 15 to 20 minutes on medium heat
  19. after steaming ukadi Che modak or steamed modak are ready to serve
  20. before serving add some ghee
  21. Ukadi Che modak Arati to offer Ganpati Bappa
