I learnt this recipe from my friend Roopa. This is a classic recipe from Karnataka and is the preferred side-dish for Nuchina Unde (Steamed Tuvar Dal Balls)

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Finely Chopped Cucumber - 1.5 Cups
  2. Yogurt - 1 cup
  3. Grated Coconut - ⅓ Cup
  4. Fried Gram - 2 tbsp
  5. Green chillies - 6
  6. Fresh Coriander - A Handful
  7. Roasted Methi Seeds - ¼ tsp
  8. Mustard Seeds - ½ tsp
  9. Red Chillies - 2
  10. Curry Leaves - 8 to 10
  11. Oil - 1 tsp
  12. Hing or Asafoetida - A Large Pinch
  13. Turmeric - A Large Pinch
  14. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Using a little water, grind coconut, fried gram, green chillies, fresh coriander, and roasted methi to a smooth paste.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Beat the yogurt till smooth.
  4. Add the cucumber, ground coconut mix, and salt to the yogurt.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Mix well.
  8. In a ladle, heat the oil.
  9. Add mustard seeds and wait till they splutter.
  10. Add split red chillies to the oil.
  11. Add the curry leaves, hing, and turmeric to the oil.
  12. Add the tempering to the cucumber yogurt mix.
