ABOUT Channe Sukhe - Black gram fugath RECIPE

This is a very famous side dish of Karnataka served for marriages and can be had with dosas, dumplings, neer dosas and idlis too. Gherkins and cashewnuts can be added too as a variation.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 250 gms black gram
  2. 4 short dry chillies
  3. 6 flakes of garlic - crushed
  4. 2 small onions
  5. 1/2 coconut grated
  6. 1 small piece of jaggery
  7. Salt to taste
  8. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1/2 tsp mustard
  10. 4 peppercorns
  11. A pinch of cumminsed
  12. One small onion
  13. 1 marble size ball of tamarind
  14. 8 long dry chillies
  15. 1 tomato
  16. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  17. 1 sprig curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Soak the grams overnight.
  2. Next day pressure cook the gram for twenty minutes with salt.
  3. Heat little oil. Add mustard, curry leaves and crushed garlic and fry till the mustard splutters.
  4. Add the ground masala and boiled gram, jaggery and cook for 5-10 minutes
  5. In another pan, add grated coconut, 2 sliced small onions and fry till light brown with little oil on a non stick pan.
  6. Once the curry is cooked add the fried coconut mixture and mix well.
  7. The prepared fugath should be semi dry. Serve with dosas, idlis, dumplings or even with rice.
