ABOUT Sooji manda pitha RECIPE

Delicious Sooji Manda Pitha, is steamed semolina dumpling stuffed with coconut and jaggery. It is an authentic and traditional pitha made in festivals and special occasions in Odisha.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Sooji/rawa 1cup
  2. Fresh Coconut shredded 1/2 a coconut
  3. Chhena (fresh paneer) - 1/4cup
  4. Jaggery 1/4cup or more according to taste
  5. Salt as per taste
  6. Water 2cups
  7. Sugar 2tbsp
  8. Cardamom crushed 1 tsp
  9. Black pepper crushed 1tsp
  10. Ghee 1tsp

Instructions

  1. Heat water(double the amount of sooji) in a kadhai.
  2. Add ghee, pinch of salt and sugar.
  3. When sugar dissolves then add the sooji and mix quickly to avoid lumps.
  4. Keep stirring till the mixture becomes a thick and lumpy mass and is sticky. 
  5. Keep it on the flame for 2 min. Remove from flame and keep aside.
  6. Let it cool down to room temp.
  7. Meanwhile prepare the stuffing.
  8. Heat a pan and add the shredded coconut and fry on low flame till light brown.
  9. Add chhena, jaggery, crushed cardamom, crushed black pepper.
  10. Cook further till the jaggery melts and coats the paneer and coconut flakes. Switch off.
  11. Now kneed the dough till soft.
  12. Make equal sized balls from the dough, flatten it on your palm.
  13. Put some coconut stuffing, roll it to make a ball.
  14. Heat water in a steamer.
  15. When its starts boiling, put the sooji balls and cover it.
  16. Steam it for 10 min. Remove from flame. Serve it hot or cold.
