ABOUT Unniyappam RECIPE

Unniyappam is a famous Kerala dish made for festivals and its quite popular in southern parts of india. It is made using bananas and rice flour as main ingredient.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Banana : 3
  2. Rice flour : 2 cup
  3. Jaggery : 3/4 cup
  4. Wheat flour : ½ cup
  5. Coconut bits : 2 tbsp (chopped)
  6. Cardamom powder : 3/4 tsp
  7. Baking soda : 1/4 tsp
  8. Water : 3/4 cup
  9. Ghee : 1 tbsp
  10. Coconut oil : for frying

Instructions

  1. Melt jaggery in water and strain it. Grind the bananas in a mixie.
  2. Add the melted jaggery to the banana puree and mix it together.
  3. Add rice flour and wheat flour to the banana jaggery paste and combine well. Add water little by little, but the batter should be with dropping consistency.
  4. Fry the coconut bits in the ghee and keep it aside. Add the fried coconut bits, cardamom powder and baking soda to the batter and rest for 40 minutes.
  5. Heat coconut oil in paniyaram pan and when the oil is hot, lower the flame to medium. Drop tablespoons of batter to the pan and fill the pits with the batter up to a little more than 3/4th full.
  6. When the bottom get a golden dark brown, turn the unniyappam with a spoon and cook the other side too.
  7. Once cooked, remove and drain on a kitchen towel.
