Orange Chicken is an American Chinese dish of Hunan origin in China. Orange Chicken is a fried chicken pieces coated in sweet orange flavoured sauce,which thickens or caramelized to a glaze.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. INGREDIENTS FOR CHICKEN
  2. Vegetable oil-1/2 cup for frying
  3. 2 whole egg whites
  4. 1 tablespoon cornflour
  5. 2 whole boneless skinless chicken thighs,cut into bite sized pieces
  6. INGREDIENTS FOR MAKING ORANGE SAUCE
  7. 1/2 cup orange juice(store bought or homemade)
  8. 1 tablespoon soya sauce
  9. 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar(or honey)
  10. 1 tablespoon vinegar
  11. 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil or vegetable oil
  12. Salt to taste
  13. Crushed red chilli flakes-1teaspoon
  14. Garlic- 4cloves(chopped)
  15. Ginger-1 teaspoon(minced)
  16. Cornflour-1 tablespoon
  17. Sesame seeds-1 teaspoon(roasted)
  18. Zest of orange-1teaspoon(just peel the skin of the orange)
  19. Water-1/2 cup
  20. Spring onions -2tablespoons(forgarnishing)

Instructions

  1. HOW TO MARINATE THE CHICKEN
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornflour and egg whites with a fork until almost forthy,about 1 minute.
  3. Add Chicken pieces to the mixture, mix and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile you make the sauce.
  5. HOW TO MAKE THE ORANGE SAUCE
  6. Add oil in a pan
  7. Add chopped garlic, fry them until light brown. Add minced ginger.
  8. Add orange juice,soya sauce, sugar, vinegar, salt, crushed red chilli flakes and 1/2 teaspoon orange zest, mix together. Heat until bubbling and starting to thicken, about 3-4 minutes.
  9. Whisk together the cornflour and 1/4 cup water in a small bowl and add to the sauce. Mix in and thicken for 1 minute. (If sauce gets overly thick, just add little bit water and whisk in)
  10. HOW TO FRY CHICKEN
  11. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy bottomed pan.
  12. In batches, carefully drop a few pieces of chicken into the oil (drop them one by one to keep them away from sticking together )and move it around on medium flame for 2-3 minutes or until light golden.
  13. Let the pieces drain on a plate lined with paper towels for 2-3 minutes.
  14. HOW TO TOSS THE CHICKEN INTO THE ORANGE SAUCE.
  15. Add the chicken pieces into the sauce.
  16. Toss the chicken in the sauce .
  17. Sprinkle roasted sesame seeds and remaining orange zest.
  18. Garnish with chopped spring onions and serve with Chinese Fried Rice.
