ABOUT Bhapa Ilish (Steamed Hilsa Fish) RECIPE

A delightful delicacy from the heart of Bengal capable to titilate any taste buds. Hilsa fish cooked with mustard paste.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Hilsa Fish (Ilish) 8 pieces
  2. Mustard 50 gms (paste)
  3. Turmeric powder 2 tablespoons
  4. Salt
  5. Mustard oil
  6. Green chili paste 1 tablespoon
  7. Green Chilies 5-6

Instructions

  1. Mix the fish pieces with 1 tablespoon turmeric powder and a pinch of salt and keep them aside.
  2. Drain the mustard seeds from water and grind into thick paste.
  3. In a pan take the fish pieces. Add the mustard paste, green chili paste, green chilies, remaining turmeric powder, salt and mustard oil.
  4. Mix the whole thing and make a uniform mixture. Pour a little more mustard oil on top.
  5. Put the whole pan into gas oven and turn it on and cook the whole thing with a covered lid in real mild flame.
  6. Cook for 15 minutes maximum. Turn off gas and keep in standing time for 2 more minutes.
  7. Serve hot ONLY WITH RICE.
