ABOUT Macher Chop or Fish Croquettes (Kolkata Style ) RECIPE
Macher chop is a Bengali style fish croquettes. It is a perfect tea time snack.In Bengal, it is generally made with using Rahu, Katla or Bhetki or Barramundi.

Ingredients for inside stuffing of the croquettes-
Onion chopped -1
Garlic Paste-2 teaspoon
Ginger paste-1 teaspoon
Chopped green chilles-2
Mashed potatoes -1(big)
Turmeric powder-1/2teaspoon
Roasted cumin powder-1teaspoon (dry roast the cumin,then grind to make a fine powder)
Garam masala powder-1teaspoon
Coriander powder-1teaspoon
Red chilli powder -1reaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil- 1cup +1tablespoons
Ingredients for outer coating-
Basan or gram flour-1cup
Water-1/4cup (if required, add more,make sure the batter should not be very thin or thick)
Breadcrumbs-1cup
Instructions
Clean the fish pieces. In a deep pan,add water,cleaned fish pieces, turmeric powder, bay leaf and salt, let it boil over medium flame.
Cook until fish pieces are cooked.
Switch off the gas. With a spatula take out the fish pieces from the hot water.Strain the water.
Let the fish pieces cool down ,if you are using fish with bones,discard fish bones and skins (if it have) and mash the fish.
Mix the mashed fish with mashed boiled potatoes .
In a pan,heat 2 tablespoons oil,when the oil is hot add chopped onions.Cook until golden brown
Add ginger garlic paste,chopped green chillies and mix all together. Cook until the raw smell of masala goes away.
Add mashed fish pieces and potatoes, mix and cook for 2-3minutes,add salt ,roasted cumin powder,red chilli powder, garan masala powder,coriander powder and cook for 2-3minutes until a nice aroma comes out.
Switch off the flame, let the mixture cool down.
Take some portion of the fish mixture and make flat round patties.
Take a bowl, add gramflour or besan, salt and water,mix well to make a batter.
Then dip the fish patties into batter,coat with breadcrumb, keep them on a plate and keep in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a pan,add pinch of salt (when you deep frying something, add pinch of salt in oil, it absorbs less oil).
Add 4 to 5 coated fish patties(according to the size of your pan)in oil,and deep fry on medium flame until golden brown colour.Take them out from pan and place them on kitchen paper.
Your macher chop or fish croquettes are ready to serve Serve it with Bengali style mustard sauce or kasundi or English mustard and onion rings .
