ABOUT Varan RECIPE

Simple and easy dal recipe made across Goa and Maharashtra. It is an essential part of the veg thali for Ganesh Chaturthi or any other puja in Goa. Served with rice or chapati. It is one of the first dish served to kids.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Toor Dal 1/4 cup
  2. Fresh grated coconut 1/4 cup
  3. Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
  4. Hing 1/4 tsp
  5. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  6. Water 1 cup
  7. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak the dal for a minimum of half an hour in warm water
  2. Pressure cook for 3 whistles
  3. Grind together coconut, hing, cumin seeds with water to make a fine paste
  4. Add to dal and boil. Add salt to taste
  5. Serve hot with rice. Add ghee while serving
