ABOUT Dahi machha besara RECIPE

Dahi machha besara is a traditional and very popular Odia delicacy. Fish cooked with yoghurt and mustard paste.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Rohu fish pieces 500gm
  2. Potato 2 cut into long big pieces
  3. Thick curd 1cup
  4. Panch Phoron 1 tsp
  5. Slited green chilli 4
  6. Crushed garlic 3cloves
  7. Dry red chilli 2
  8. Curry leaves few
  9. Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  10. Red chilli powder 1tsp
  11. salt as per taste
  12. Mustard oil 4tbsp
  13. For masala paste -
  14. Yellow turmeric - 3tbsp
  15. Poppy seeds 1tsp
  16. Cumin seeds 1tsp
  17. Fresh or dessicated Coconut 2tbsp
  18. Garlic cloves 6-7
  19. Green chilli 2-3

Instructions

  1. Marinate fish pieces with salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and 1tsp mustard oil.
  2. Keep for 15-20mins.
  3. Soak poppy seeds, yellow mustard seeds separately.
  4. Make a paste of mustard seeds, poppy seeds, cumin seeds, coconut, garlic and green chilli.
  5. Add more green chilli if you want more spice.
  6. Take curd in a mixing bowl, add the prepared paste.
  7. Mix well.
  8. Heat oil in a kadhai.
  9. Add panch phoron, dry red chilli, curry leaves and mix well.
  10. When splutter, lower the gas, add the yoghurt mixture and stir continuously.
  11. When oil separates add 1-1/2cup of water,salt and turmeric powder.
  12. Cook for few mins.
  13. When boil comes add the fish pieces and potato pieces.
  14. Cook covered for 5mins.
  15. Check the fish pieces, turn the pieces carefully and cook further for 4-5 mins more.
  16. Finally add crushed garlic, slited green chilli and 1tbsp mustard oil(optional) on top and switch off.
  17. Dahi machha besara is ready.
  18. Enjoy this creamy curry with steamed rice.
  19. The authentic way is to use raw fish and tastes best too, but if you want you can shallow fry the fish pieces before adding to curry.
  20. You can use rohu, katla or ilishi.
  21. Note- Panch phoron is a mixture of Cumin, Brown Mustard, Fenugreek, Nigella and Fennel seeds.
