ABOUT Jhal Muri (Bengali Spicy Puffed Rice) RECIPE

A popular spicy street food of Kolkata and Bangladesh that is famous for it's spices and crunch. This can be prepared at home very easily. Though we cannot get the authentic taste of jhal muri sold by the street vendors, this one by me comes close to it by 96%. The best part is, it's made at home with proper hygience and following all standards of cleanliness. So what more could one ask for? This makes a super yummy snack for the evenings. Mustard oil gives it such a fantastic colour to the dish. It is that one secret ingredient that should not be missed because it tastes so good only with mustard oil. It is a must for this recipe to maintain it's authenticity. Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Puffed rice 500 gm
  2. Salt 1 tbsp
  3. Chaat masala 1 tbsp
  4. Green chillies finely chopped 4
  5. Lemon 1
  6. Cucumbers chopped 3
  7. Onions finely chopped 2
  8. Mustard oil 3-4 tbsp
  9. Black chickpeas (Kala chana) boiled 1 1/2 cups
  10. Coriander leaves chopped 1/2 cup
  11. Sev thin variety 1 cup
  12. Bombay mix or savoury 1 cup
  13. Peanuts 1 cup
  14. Tomatoes chopped 1
  15. Potatoes boiled and cubed 2
  16. FOR THE MURI MASALA ; Coriander seeds 1 tbsp
  17. Cumin seeds 1 tbsp
  18. Dry red chillies 3
  19. Bay leaves 3
  20. Black salt 1/4th tsp
  21. Garam masala 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Keep all the ingredients ready.
  2. To a large bowl, add puffed rice at first.
  3. Now add in all the ingredients one by one except mustard oil and lemon.
  4. Dry roast all the masalas.
  5. Grind all the roasted masalas to a fine powder.
  6. Finally add this spicy muri masala also called as moodi masala to the bowl.
  7. Lastly stir in the mustard oil.
  8. Mix well and squeeze a small lemon on it.
  9. Mix and serve immediately.
