  6. 1 small ginger
  7. 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  8. 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  9. 2 Bay Leaves
  10. 1 tbsp garam masala
  11. 1 tbsp red chilly powder

  13. 1 tbsp cumin powder
  14. 1 tbsp coriander powder
  15. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  16. salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Wash dal in a running water till the water is clear.
  2. Pressure cook it by adding salt till 4 to 5 whistle.
  3. Let it cool.
  4. Take roughly chopped onion, tomato, garlic, green chilly and ginger in a mixer jar. Blend it well by adding water and prepare a puree.
  5. Take a deep vessel and add ghee or oil to it. Keep the flame to medium to prevent burning of spices and mixture.
  6. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.let it splutter.
  7. Add bay leaves, and with a quick stir add prepared puree.
  8. Stir it continuously on a medium flame till the mixture reduces to a dry paste.
  9. Add all the spices to the dry mixture along with little water and stir it nicely.
  10. Cover it with a lid and let it simmer for about 10 mins.
  11. Check the consistency and now add dal to the prepared mixture by adding 3 cups of water or as required.
  12. Add salt and stir it nicely. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for about 10 mins on a medium flame.
  13. Once you see that it has reached a boiling point open the lid and stir it nicely. I recommend to stir in between to prevent the sticking and burning process.
  14. Switch off the flame and garnish it with coriander leaves.
  15. Enjoy Punjabi dal with plain rice or paratha.
