ABOUT Sorakkai Paruppu ( Bottle Gourd With Dal) RECIPE

South Indian style bottle gourd with dal is a very simple yet comforting dish. It is a low calorie, low fat, low cholesterol, high fiber and rich protein from the dal. Bottle gourd has cooling properties due to its high water content. This dish goes well with hot steam rice or any Indian bread. Taste amazing with a drizzle of ghee over it.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Moong dal - ½ cup
  2. Bottle gourd/ lauki - 1 medium size cubed
  3. Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Oil - 1 tbsp
  6. Water - 1½- 2 cups or as required
  7. For tempering:
  8. Mustard seeds - ½ tsp 
  9. Cumin seeds - ½ tsp 
  10. Red chillies - 2 whole 
  11. Curry leaves - 4-5
  12. Green chillies - 1-2 slit
  13. Ginger - a small piece finely chopped 
  14. Garlic - 2 chopped 
  15. Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp 
  16. Asafoetida - a pinch 

Instructions

  1. Soak the tamarind in little water in a small bowl for sometime and extract the juice out of it. 
  2. Add the dal,  bottle gourd, water, salt to taste  in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for about 3 whistles. Let the pressure release by itself and coarsely mash the dal and bottle gourd with the back If the laddle. 
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red chillies a let it crackle. 
  4. Add the curry leaves, green chillies, ginger, garlic and saute for about 2 mins. 
  5. Add the turmeric powder and asafoetida and tamarind juice and cook for a min or two. 
  6. Add this tempering to the dal bottle gourd mixture, give a good stir and take off the heat.
